Their collaboration started with 450 Warren, a condominium in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill with an open-air court framed by wire mesh. A project in Fort Green, 144 Vanderbilt — the pink building — includes more of the same, layering small private outdoor spaces, exterior circulation and larger common gardens. The innovation over the past is the multiple levels across which run-ins with neighbors and greenery can take place.

The building is wrapped in pink precast concrete with two finishes: an acid wash and sandblasted texture, according to Tankhouse. SO-IL’s design weaves together indoor and outdoor spaces in both private and common areas with corridors, porches, and shared landscaped terraces. While work is still under way on the interiors, renderings show large, breezy apartments that appear spacious and light, with considered volumes and sight lines.

The first residence to be completed is a four-bedroom, three-bathroom duplex home turned by local studio General Assembly into a domestic design gallery showcasing the best of Brooklyn. The focus is on the hyper-local here: most of the project partners work or live a stone’s throw away from the new building, and the furnishings are sourced from General Assembly’s Brooklyn-based retail shop, Assembly Line.

In Brooklyn, a Pink Building Stands Out

At the intersection of Myrtle and Vanderbilt Avenues in Brooklyn, a restaurant and fish market sit on one side of Myrtle, while townhouses and an apartment building line Vanderbilt. Some of these buildings are made of brick, and most are neutral toned. But at the corner, one building is an outlier: It's pink.

That pink building — on the site of a former gas station at 144 Vanderbilt Avenue in Fort Greene — is slated to be completed at the beginning of next year. The building's ripped edges, stacked silhouette and varying height stand out in stark contrast to anything else nearby. Tankhouse, a Brooklyn-based developer, collaborated on the project, to be known as 144 Vanderbilt, with SO-IL, an architecture firm, and Ted Kane, the project's architect of record.
